pfaffies-digest Wednesday, 21 May 1997 Volume 01 : Number 1454 From: "Dexter Laubach" Date: Wed, 21 May 97 03:20:08 UT Subject: PFAFF: Big Hoop Splitting Hi Kath, You asked how I split files for the Big Hoop. I do it manually, on a file by file trial and error. First I study the file to figure out where to split it, then I try it. The first file I did was the ÔFlower1Õ design from ESPonline. It has 3 flowers running down the middle, and two flowers on each side. I created 2 files - one for the left side, and one for the right side. I started out with the whole design in both files, and deleted the parts I wanted out. I started in the Left file, and deleted the 2 right flowers, and from the center grouping of the 3 leaves, I deleted the right leaf and its stem, down to the joining on the main stem. What I had now was a grouping of 2 flowers, 3 flowers, and the 2 main center leaves - I saved that as my Left file. There was a little bit of clean up work, but it wasnÕt too bad. For the Right file, I deleted the parts I had kept for the Left file, so out went the grouping of 2 flowers on the left side, the 3 center flowers, and the 2 main center leaves, and their stems. I had the right grouping of 2 flowers, and the right main center leaf with its stem saved as my Right file. Is this clear as mud? Now I had to scale it back up to the size the ESPonline files list it as, because after converting the design over, it was smaller than the ESPonline dimensions. So I took the DST length from the thumbnail picture and divided it by the PCS length I had from by Pfaff software - in the original Flower1 whole file. I got something like 1.8. I did the same thing with the width dimension - and got close to 1.85. So, I went to the ÔNew Pattern SizeÕ command in our Pfaff software, and changed the dimensions of both my Left and Right files by that factor - I compromised and multiplied by 1.83. Then I did a test sewing - sewed out the left file first, moved the hoop forward, and sewed out the right side., and found I had to adjust the placement setting a bit on CRT display to line it up - but it got there, and it is a really pretty and delicate design that IÕm going to sew on my next project. Since, I have learned to make the ending point of the first file be the same as the beginning point of the first file - and to watch real carefully when sewing out the second file, to make sure that first needle point goes where itÕs supposed to - a lot easier to line up that way. I posted what I did on May 21 to the list, so if you all go in to archives, you should find it there under Pfaffies Digest, search for the 1:15 a.m. mailing. It's under Big Hoop Splitting. If the design is too large for our 120 hoop, you'll have to know the original dimensions to get it to the original size. ESPonline has those size dimensions with their thumbnail designs, so it's possible to scale to the original size. If you don't have the original dimesions, then it's by guess and by golly - but you can get close if you enlarge the drawing, and figure out how close the fill stitches are. You know how far they should be - about .16 to .2mm apart, so you have to figure it out from there. I do have a template I made, that helps me see where to put everything, but I can't send it to the list, because attachments aren't allowed. You can make your own by drawing a 5 mm square grid in the Big Hoop, making 2 copies at 1 to 1 format, taping them together with that 15mm overlap, and hilighting where that 15mm is. Your left file fits in the left side of the template and that common area, and the right file fits in the right side of the template and that common area. That hilighted area is common to both hoops. I cut mine out, and keep it with my plastic big hoop template from Pfaff. Joyce Bates very kindly posted the site that has the 'Think Spring' design already split up for HUS format. So, you smartsizer people have one more big hoop design to add to your collection. Joan in Kent, Washington Mailto:Dexter_Laubach@msn.com
